TMU Proton Center

Efficient and meticulous treatment

Introduction

More than 20 years ago, President Jeng-Fong Chiou, the former director of the Radiation Oncology Department of Taipei Medical University Hospital, deeply felt that particle therapy will be a powerful tool for the next generation of radiation therapy. After endless efforts of organization by the entire TMU team, IBA Proteus® ONE superconducting proton machine is completely constructed in July 2022 finally. TMU Proton Center can therefore provide world-class medical technology and services for cancer patients.

Proton therapy is an advanced technology in the field of radiation therapy. It is also a global trend of radiation oncology treatment. Top cancer hospitals have successively established proton centers. TMU Proton Center adopts superconducting proton machines and combines the advantages of proton therapy with a multidisciplinary integrated care model, leading the cancer treatment of Taipei Medical University and Affiliated Hospitals to a whole new milestone.

Development history

After receiving accord from the school affairs and board of directors in 2013, Taipei Medical University began the preparation and application procedure. After a fierce competition in Taiwan, TMU officially obtained the approval letter in January 2017 and launched the construction of the proton center. A rainwater drainage pipe used to be under the campus plaza. It was relocated thanks to the approval from the Hydraulic Engineering Office of Public Works Department in Taipei City Government. After the relocation in December 2018, the proton construction project started. As the TMU Proton Center is located in the prosperous Xinyi District, which is close to schools, hospitals and nearby residential areas; plus the adoption of internationally rare, fully underground buildings, the construction and installation become even more difficult.

On October 11, 2018, roughly a year after the excavation started, Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH) successfully obtained the permission of the radiation safety report so that they could start the irrigation of radiation shielding. TMUH later obtained the building use permit on December 15, 2021. The installation time was delayed three times due to the novel COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the acceptance test of the proton therapy machine was successful in April 2022, and the trial operation report was submitted to the Atomic Energy Council of the Executive Yuan for review.

The TMU Proton Center has been established. It has the first most advanced fourth-generation superconducting delicate proton therapy machine in Taiwan which becomes the third proton center in Taiwan and the first operating one in Taipei. We look forward to exerting its function by comprehensively enhancing the standard of cancer treatment at Taipei Medical University and Affiliated Hospitals, and then develop it into a world-class cancer treatment center in order to reach the goal of Comprehensive Cancer Center. Based on 15 cancer teams, Taipei Medical University Hospital will provide multidisciplinary integrated cancer care resources, and combine the resources of the Taipei Medical University and Affiliated Hospitals, aiming to become a cross-international cancer treatment brand and an international stronghold for cancer treatment. .

Hyperthermia Treatment Center

The synergistic effect of hyperhermia Surgery with high temperature and chemotherapeutic medication greatly help those cancer victims suffer from peritoneal seeding of intraperitoneal metastasis, who were viewed at their wits’ end. The use of hyperhermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in our hospital can achieve good therapeutic results. We continue performing the treatment and is a substantial hospital in Taiwan. The hospital also established a hyperthermia treatment center to provide local and systemic cancer warming treatment to effectively improve cancer survival rate.

MRgFUS Ultrasound Therapy

Although some people have sound limbs, they cannot live independently due to spontaneous tremor. It is difficult to perform daily basic movements such as picking vegetables, pouring water, squeezing toothpaste, and brushing teeth, let alone work. Because of the financial burden of tremor at home, they have difficulties in maintaining their livelihoods, and even affect their social activities.

Shuanghe Hospital recently admitted a 42-year-old Mr. Wen, whose hands were shaking uncontrollably, which caused great trouble to his daily life, work and social life. After neurological evaluation and examination, the diagnosis was primary tremor. At the suggestion of the medical team of Shuanghe Hospital, the Shenbo knife-"Magnetic Navigation Focused Ultrasound" treatment is adopted. This is a non-invasive and non-invasive precision treatment. There is no need to implant electrodes and batteries in the patient's brain. The complication does not require anesthesia, and the treatment is performed while the patient is awake, and it is completed in one go with MRI and MRI navigation.

Dr. Hong Qiandai, Department of Neurology, Shuanghe Hospital, said that primary tremor is caused by nerve degeneration, which causes persistent tremors in different parts of the body. There is no specific underlying cause. It is the most common among the elderly, but it can also occur at any age. More than half of patients with primary tremor have a family history of hereditary diseases. It is estimated that about 400,000 people in China have such problems, and the symptoms of about 100,000 people seriously affect daily life. Their life will cause inconveniences, large and small, due to tremors. In addition to writing unable to accurately hold the pen, but taking the cup and sprinkling the water, in the operation of some more sophisticated affairs, such as taking the key to unlock, coming to them It is also a big challenge.

Traditionally, the first treatment for primary tremor is medication. If the symptoms cannot be controlled, further surgical treatment is required. Dr. Weilun Luo, Department of Neurosurgery, Shuanghe Hospital, said that traditional surgery such as thalamotomy or deep brain stimulator (DBS) requires both to perform craniotomy on the patient's head and use a special blunt needle The location of the thalamus in the brain is continuously burned or implanted with a chip for electrical stimulation. Many patients are afraid of the need to open the brain and the need to place the electrode in the body, and they are stuck.

Compared with traditional surgical invasive surgery, the Shenbo knife-"Magnetic Navigation Focused Ultrasound" is a non-invasive and non-invasive treatment. Dr. Hong Qiandai emphasized that through more than 1,000 ultrasound probes to concentrate energy in the thalamus, heating the local brain area makes nerves Necrosis to interrupt the nervous circuit that produces tremor. No anesthesia or skull opening is required during the process. During the execution of the treatment, energy can be accurately guided to the target nucleus (length and width about 2 mm) through MRI, and the tremor is immediately completed It will be the mainstream treatment to replace craniotomy in the future.

Mr. Wen, a patient suffering from tremor, mentioned that he used to be a video game maintenance technician, and suddenly became sick at the age of 35, changing his life from color to black and white. Drug therapy was adopted at the early stage of the onset, and tremor was well controlled. After 2 years, the medication is not well controlled and the degree of tremor is getting worse. In the face of taking medicine, he could not effectively improve his tremor, prevented him from eating normally with his family and friends, and could not find a job, which affected his social activities, which in turn affected his psychological level, which made him discouraged in life and had despair. After a series of precise examinations in Shuanghe Hospital, such as writing test, pouring water test, hand-painted spiral chart test, etc., the medical team of Shuanghe Hospital used the Shenbo knife precise treatment technology to complete the tremor treatment at one time, improve his quality of life and recover confidence.
