The Department of Oncology

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Taiwan for more than 3 decades and is one of the leading cause of death in many countries in the Asia-Pacific area. There had been great improvement in the survival of cancer patients in Taiwan during the past 3 decades, especially in non-small cell lung cancers, breast cancers, and liver cancers.

The Department of Oncology of the National Taiwan University Hospital Hsin-Chu branch is composed of Division of Medical Oncology and Division of Radiation Oncology. We take care of more than 3,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients every year, including patients with breast cancers, lung cancers, colorectal cancers, hepatocellular carcinomas, head and neck cancers, gastric cancer…etc. We provide oncology outpatient clinics, outpatient chemotherapy services, and inpatient wards. We also provide cancer-specific nutrition consultation and psychologic consultation.

As anti-cancer therapy is always a teamwork, we established multi-disciplinary team for each cancer type. In each multi-disciplinary team, there are medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and physicians who may be involved in patient care. A clinical coordinator is responsible for the management of each multi-disciplinary team. The clinical coordinator also coordinates the treatment course of each individual cancer patient so that the quality of the care for each individual cancer patient will be guaranteed.

National Taiwan University Hospital is the leading academic medical center in Taiwan, and the Hsin-Chu branch is also good at academic research. We had participated in a lot of international multi-center anti-cancer clinical trials, including phase I, phase 2, and phase 3 trials. We focus more on advanced lung cancers and breast cancers, but we are also interested in other cancer types.

We are confident that the Department of Oncology, National Taiwan University Hospital Hsin-Chu branch is one of the top cancer therapy units in Taiwan as well as the Asian-Pacific region.

Environmental and Occupational Medicine

Hsinchu area is an important base for Taiwan's technology industry, including semiconductor manufacturing industry chain, electronic manufacturing, precision machinery manufacturing, biomedicine, and other industries. The National Taiwan University Hospital Hsinchu Branch established the Department of Environment and Occupational Medicine in 2016. It undertakes the Occupational Injury and Disease Prevention and Control Network Hospital Program of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Ministry of Labor to provide services for labor patients in the Hsinchu area. The Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine currently has 4 attending physicians and 3 occupational health nurses, providing 7 clinics of environmental and occupational medicine every week and more than 240 hours of occupational health service for enterprises every month. The main medical services provided include diagnosis and treatment of occupational injuries and diseases, advice on return to work and work accommodation of the injured and diseased workers, heavy metal detection and evaluation, and on-site health services for enterprises. In addition to providing medical services in hospital outpatient clinics, physicians also conduct hazard assessments in the workplace as a basis for diagnosing the etiology of occupational diseases and formulating workplace safety and health promotion strategies. The department regularly organizes online lectures by occupational medicine experts in the Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli areas every month to enhance new knowledge of occupational medicine and share medical service experiences.

Interventional pulmonology

Interventional pulmonology is a relatively novel field in chest medicine. In our hospital, the members in this field include pulmonologists and chest surgeons who can perform advanced diagnosis and treatment technology for lung disease.

The combination of bronchoscopic, transthoracic, and surgical techniques helps achieve the special and integrated features of interventional pulmonology. We performed invasive procedures, including bronchoscopy-guided lung biopsy, transbronchial needle aspiration, transbronchial ablation, pleuroscopy, bronchoscopic trans-parenchymal nodule access (BTPNA), bronchoscopic thermal vapor ablation (BTVA), iGuided transthoracic lung biopsy, and transthoracic microwave or cryoablation.

In our hospital, we can perform a “one-stop” procedure for lung nodules, including tumor localization via bronchoscopy or transthoracic localization followed by thoracic surgical procedure. Using the “one-stop” method, we could avoid the time lag between localization and surgical resection; besides, we can also prevent the possible complications during patient transferal.

We performed bronchoscopy biopsy, including forcep biopsy and cryobiopsy. Many procedures were performed under the guidance of augmented fluoroscopy. The localization under augmented fluoroscopy increased the yield rate of tissue proof, especially in the relative peripheral lung lesion. We also performed many transthoracic needle aspirations from mediastinal lesions. We performed transthoracic biopsy and microwave or cryoprobe ablation with iGuide assistance under augmented fluoroscopy guidance.

We often performed the procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. In our institute, we can manage the lung lesion or obtain the lung tissue via multimodal methods. These methods need cooperation between the pulmonologist and the chest surgeon, and provide more precise treatment and diagnosis for patients with lung disease.
